guíaPreparing the layette is one of the loveliest parts of the wait… and one that raises the most questions. If your baby is due between October and March, this is the list that saves you from buying too much or forgetting things at the last minute.
The basics (newborn and 0–3 months)
- 6–8 long-sleeve bodysuits: they're the first layer and get changed several times a day.
- 4–6 footed pyjamas: cotton or thermal; one or two in fleece if your home is cold.
- 2–3 outfits for going out or receiving visitors.
- 1–2 knitted cardigans to add a layer indoors.
- 1 coat, snowsuit or pram bag for going out.
Must-have accessories
- 2 little hats (for going outside) and mittens.
- 4–6 pairs of socks or booties.
- Bibs and muslins: you can never have too many.
- A blanket for the pram and a sleeping bag for the cot.
- A hooded towel for bath time.
Newborn or 0–3 months?
Many babies only wear newborn size for a few weeks. Buy just a few items in that size and more in 0–3 months. If your baby is expected to be big, start straight with 0–3. You'll find the exact measurements in our size guide.
Before the baby arrives
- Wash all the clothes before first use (we explain how in our guide to washing baby clothes).
- Pack a complete change of clothes in the hospital bag.
- Leave some labels on: that way you can change the size if needed.
Is it a gift? Our gift sets combine layette, pyjamas and bath time in the same print, and you choose the size of each item.
